Hwicce
are members of the largest and earliest Dark Age society
in Britain, The
Vikings, who re-create life and times in the 10th century.
The society has been around since the early 1970's, and
is well known for it's work with English Heritage, and also
film and TV work. Hwicce are the North Bucks group, with
their stronghold in the fortress town of Milton Keynes.
However, our presence can be felt through out the land with
members as far south as Cornwall, as far west as Wales,
as far east as Essex. We are spreading northwards with a
scouting party in Leeds. If you want to meet us or are interested
in joining, see our Training
page.
The
group started around 13 years ago, with a few like minded
souls at Oxford University. Then we were known as the Wychwood
Warriors About 10 years ago Wychwood were approached by
the Swindon branch of The Vikings and joined the national
society under the name Aescesdun. The majority of the members
split from Aescesdun to form Hwicce about 11 years ago,
as the Oxford branch of The Vikings. Most of our members
are now either ex-Oxford University or have joined from
outside the university.
From
the beginning it was decided to keep Hwicce and the Wychwood
Warriors as two separate entities, which has worked well,
since both groups are still thriving. Hwicce is now the
North Buckinghamshire branch of The Vikings, due to a concentration
of our membership in Milton Keynes, and the Wychwood Warriors
are the Oxford University Dark-Ages re-enactment group.
In
our ranks we have a diverse range of people, from doctors
to computer Engineers, from students to mechanics. We are
all here, and we all play a part. Our battlefield persona's
range from Saxons to Celts to Magyars to Vikings although,
so far, we have managed to stop a Norman influence, Thank
the Gods.
